Greenfield
South Power Corporation, together with its affiliate Eastern Power
Limited, is developing the Greenfield South Power Plant: a natural
gas-fired combined cycle electricity generating facility with a
capacity of 280 MW. Similar plants have recently been located
in urban areas around the world including London, New York, Los
Angeles, and Toronto.
The plant will
be built in the City of Mississauga, Ontario on a 4.5 hectare
property at 2315 Loreland Avenue. Part of the project’s
property will be dedicated to the City as greenbelt, and the plant
will occupy roughly 2 hectares of the property.
With a small
footprint, the project is one of the smallest high efficiency clean
energy projects in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and will not only
meet the electrical needs of the local communities in Mississauga,
but will also dramatically improve the quality and reliability of
electricity supply in the GTA.
Greenfield
South has a 20 year Clean Energy Supply Agreement with the Ontario
Power Authority, and the project is included in the province’s clean
energy, “off coal” plan. As a part of the “off coal” plan the
plant will contribute to improving air quality in Mississauga and
Ontario.
Major
equipment includes one combustion turbine, one heat recovery steam
generator, and one steam turbine. Plant cooling is by wet mechanical
draft cooling tower. Process water is to be taken from the municipal
water supply system. Natural gas will be the only fuel source for
the facility.
The plant will
utilize existing transmission infrastructure, local to the plant.
The plant will be connected to the Hydro One 230 kV circuit R24C to
feed generation into the Ontario electricity system administered by
the Independent Electricity System Operator.
This project is creating new jobs in the local area. Over the
course of construction approximately 350 jobs will be added, and
during operation of the plant 35 permanent jobs will be required.
